Professor told me…
On the day of my final for my THE100 class, I sat in class waiting for my group. My professor greeted me and I did the same. Then she asked me what was I majoring in. I sort of knew where the conversation was going because I scored a perfect 75/75 on my essay and I expressed how much I loved film and screenplays.
I told her “Public Relations.” And she gave me a funny look. Then she sighed and asked me why I wasn’t majoring in film. I give her the answer that I give everyone: it’s a backup plan. And she shook her head.
A few days ago, the class laughed when they heard there is a ‘hip-hop studies’ major. She didn’t. What could someone do with that major? She said they could be happy. They can be a teacher. A critic. A musician. And what are the people going to be that only choose a major because it makes the most bank? Miserable.
She knows that film is just not a hobby for me. She asks what school has a good film program. Definitely not where I’m at. But North and Long has a great one. She tells me to go there.
I thought the conversation was over until she asked me, “Who discouraged you.” People…and myself.
I thank her for the talk. I realize that I’m going to be miserable.
I have a wonderful job located in a school I don’t wish to be in. I’m in a major that I’m using to simply watch other people doing what I love so much. I have a free ride in a school that have honestly, betrayed me many times.
(Guys can I get your opinion?)
(( I just want to know among the MGS fandom who do you like better, Big Boss or Solid Snake. The original super soldier, or the cloned super soldier’s son? Me? Well I can’t decide honestly. I mean I love Solid Snake because he’s been with us from the beginning, and it just seems like his time as a young FOXHOUND’er would be interesting to explore, and he’s also got a more interesting group of support characters like Otacon and Meryl. BUT… I also love Big Boss because of what he fought for and for just how much of a badass he is, I mean someone who gets fed up with their shady country and decides to form their own has got to be something special.
Gargh, the argument of the fight between Big Boss and Solid Snake being “unfair” because of Big Boss’s age is totally tired and weak. Snake lost ALL of his equipment and had to fight against an ARMED Big Boss. He was just savvy enough to make a makeshift flamethrower. When I look at The End from MGS3, or even Big Boss disarming a traumatized Snake in MGS4’s ending, I know that age has nothing to with it.
And I’ll take Solid Snake. And quite on the contrary, he has personality, emotions, and he’s,y’know, “human.” He can fall in love, become angry, make jokes about “pulling ears” and whatnot. This man was created to kill and live only for war. But ultimately, he chose not to be a victim to his genes. He made a change, started Philanthropy with Otacon and stopped using lethal weapons. He chose not to kill himself, but to live. To not die by the gun. The man stopped being a puppet and took his own path and made his own decisions. That’s some special shit.
I love his interaction with characters like Meryl and Raiden. It shows his other side as a paternal/romantic-like figure. Like the silly codec flirtations between him and Meryl (even Naomi and Mei Ling) and his lectures about treating a cardboard box with care when speaking to Raiden (and his final MGS2 monologue will always strike a chord). When Meryl was shot down, we saw him angry and in doubt - thinking he was trash and even afraid that Ocelot wasn’t the bluffing type. What stood out to me was him completely shitting on Naomi because she mocked, “lol, you have emotions??” He didn’t know what his genes told him, but he was going to save Meryl, not for Campbell, but for himself.
Shame his final arc ended in such a shitty game, but I hope Kojima never touches the character again (he will though). I don’t need to be spoonfed his every belief, favorite movies, or whether he sexed up that intern at FOXHOUND and so on. He’s brilliant the way he is.
So yeah, Solid Snake :-P
Hopefully this film will introduce you to the wonderful Geinoh Yamashirogumi. They’re talented as fuck. Search up if you loved the soundtrack.
Hilarious reading the AKIRA tag. First time watchers have nooooo idea what coming :-P
Fairly certain AKIRA has one of the greatest openings of all time.
Track of the day. Fuck I’m so hyped for Akira on Toonami.
All time, top-most, must-have WANT
MR SAM HUMPHRIES WRITES:
Would kill for this. Unfortunately it’s a (very well-executed) custom job, not mass produced.
AKIRA CLUB says the original game was provided by Taito…but I’d bet big money it was built on a Gottlieb solid state machine, probably a late-model System 1.
UPDATE: Bingo. It was a Gottlieb Buck Rogers machine, System 1, 1980.
UPDATE UPDATE: Good lord, compare the original Buck Rogers board to the Akira version above, that is an INCREDIBLE custom job!!
